Formal-Contemporary Our clients were looking for a formal but contemporary garden to complement their impressive traditional style, new-build stone house. The plot is shallow and wide, overlooking modern agricultural buildings which dominated the view from the back of the house. The clients asked that we screen the less desirable views, create two separate dining areas and ensure these were not overlooked by neighbouring homes.

We designed a bold pergola along the whole of the rear of the garden which effectively diminished the dominance of the Dutch barn, and provided an opportunity for planting climbers such as Roses, Clematis and Grape Vine.
The pergola also provides a lovely vista across the garden and shade on a hot day.

Our clients are keen gardeners, so the formal lines of the design are softened with profuse planting in bold purples, blues, silvers and pinks. The garden contains two patio areas, one is large and open for entertaining and the second is small and intimate for drinks and relaxation. A single line pergola beside the smaller patio gives privacy from neighbours, whilst a Cherry tree screens the larger terrace and provides dappled shade. The sky is reflected in a large, raised pool, overlooked by a painted bench.
